DAY 01: LJUBLJANA
Arrival to Ljubljana. It has won the European Green Capital Award for 2016. Meet & greet followed by a transfer to your hotel. Accommodation and overnight stay.
DAY 02: LJUBLJANA
Start the city tour that consists of a walk around the old city centre and a tourist train ride to the castle hill. After an ascent to outlook tower at Ljubljana Castle with a beautiful panoramic view of the city, we descend the hill on foot to the old city centre. We'll pass the Town Hall and continue through the historical city centre, well known for its unique architectural beauty, which is the result of the Baroque and Art Nouveau periods and, most notably, the work of the famous 20th century architect Joze Plecnik. Why not end the tour with a boat ride on the Ljubljanica river? Free afternoon. Overnight stay.
DAY 03: LJUBLJANA-THE ALPS REGION-LJUBLJANA
We will drive from Ljubljana to Kamnik, one of the loveliest and oldest towns in Slovenia where we will visit Budnar’s house, a unique museum, where we will learn the traditional way to make bread, namely in a ‘smoke’ kitchen. We will continue the tour to Velika Planina, a mountain plateau with green pastures and the typical and unique architecture of more than 50 shepherds’ huts. After descending from Velika Planina we will visit a brandy cellar that offers homemade brandies from all over Slovenia. After the tasting we will visit the source of the Kamniška Bistrica river, one of Slovenia’s clearest rivers. Return back to Ljubljana. Overnight stay.
DAY 04: LJUBLJANA-UPPER CARNIOLA HIGLIGHTS-BLED
The Alpine region lies between the Julian Alps and the Karavanke high peaks. We'll make our first stop at Bled, the magnificent alpine village with a mountain lake and a tiny island in the middle, and admire the amazing view from the old castle up on the cliff. A challenge for your eyes and your body awaits you on the island where a temple of the Slavic goddess of love Ziva used to stand. A glorious gothic church takes its place nowadays. To reach the ancient glory on the island we recommend you to take a special boat called »pletna«. We will continue to the breathtaking beauty of Bled’s Vintgar gorge, where we'll take a short walk through the national park… to Bohinj, where we'll stop by the glacial alpine lake in the Triglav National Park. After tasting some exquisite sour milk we'll head onto Skofja Loka, have a walk around this medieval town, situated under a castle and the monastery, and visit the famous gingerbread museum. Overnight stay in Bled.
DAY 05: BLED-POSOCJE EMERALD REGION-NOVA GORICA
We will start from Bled and continue to the highest Slovenian mountain pass Vrsic and through the beautiful Trenta valley to Bovec, a natural monument famous for the emerald green Alpine Soca river and its extreme sport center. We will visit the beatiful Tolmin Gorges and proceed to Kobarid, where we visit a 1st World War Museum. We will continue the tour to one of the most interesting regions in Slovenia – Goriska Brda. The region is known for producing some of the best wines in Slovenia and we will have a wine tasting. We will then drive to Nova Gorica and stay overnight.
DAY 06: NOVA GORICA-KARST AND COAST TOUR-PORTOROZ
We will drive from Nova Gorica to Stanjel to observe the typical Karst houses and the settlement on the hill. We will continue our trip to Lipica, the homeland of the famous white horse Lipizzaner, where we will see a show with “dancing” horses and find out how the stud farm operates. From Lipica we head on to the Skocjan Caves, one of the largest and most beautiful Karst sights which is also enlisted as UNESCO world heritage site. After seeing the caves and having tasted some wine and prosciutto from the region, we head on to the Slovenian coast and discover Piran, the Slovenian medieval coastal jewel. The main square is named after Giuseppe Tartini, a famous violinist and a composer who was born here. On the hill above the square you can see the Church of Saint George, the patron saint of the town. The small gem is still partially surrounded by a typical Venetian wall situated in the Bay of Piran which used to serve as the protection of this marine and salt trade hub. Overnight stay in Portoroz.
DAY 07: PORTOROZ-NOTRANJSKA REGION-MARIBOR
After relaxing in Portoroz, we will visit the Secovlje Salina Nature Park where approximately 2000 tons of salt are produced annualy and we will learn about traditional salt production. We will continue the tour to the medieval fairytale Predjama Castle, located in its dramatic setting, perched proudly on its 123-metre cliff. From Postojna we will take a walking tour of the major sights of the Rakov Skocjan nature reserve and solve the riddle of the mysterious Lake Cerknica. That will be followed by a drive to Maribor, the European Capital of culture in 2012. Overnight stay.
DAY 08: MARIBOR–GORNJA RADGONA-MARIBOR
Maribor is surrounded by wine-growing hills on all sides. Its historic town centre carries a distinct Austrian influence, and we will admire the lively and colourful squares – Castle square, Slomsek square with the cathedral, Main Square, franciscan church, the old sinagogue and of course Lent, the old river port. The oldest vine in the world still grows in front of the Old Vine house. The confirmed age of this “Zametovka” or “Modra Kavcina” vine is over 400 years, which won it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes. We'll spend an afternoon in Gornja Radgona to see the famous sparkling wine cellaer, and taste the gold medal sparking wine Zlata Penina. Return to Maribor. Overnight stay in hotel.
DAY 09: MARIBOR-EAST SLOVENIA
We wil take a tour to Jeruzalem, a picturesque village known for its stunning scenery and one of the most beautiful wine roads in Europe. The Jeruzalem Wine Road is famous for wide myriad of excellent wines. Wine tasting in that part of Slovenia is an absolute must. We will finally arrive to Ptuj, one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia. Ptuj is the oldest town in the coutry with a history dating back all the way to the roman period, and has many monuments to prove it. It is built on the top of huge wine cellars on the banks of the river Drava. Situated by the river, Ptuj was an important stop on the prehistoric Baltic – Mediterranean amber trading route. The view from the castle above the city is simply breathtaking. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY 10: MARIBOR-LJUBLJANA
Free time in the morning. Transfer to the airport/end of services.
