WHEN 3 COUNTRIES MEET ON THE COAST (SLOVENIAN AND CROATIAN ISTRIA WITH A TOUCH OF ITALY) (5 DAYS)
DAY 01: LJUBLJANA–SLOVENIAN COAST Tour starts in the Slovene capital – Ljubljana. It has won the European Green Capital Award in 2016. On a track of your choice you are traveling to the Slovenian Riviera that starts south of Trieste. At the 45 km long stretch of coast lying next to the swanky, traditional seaside resort of Portoroz, the charming little town of Piran, Koper and Izola are situated. Their city centres have flair ot the Venetian past. Overnight stay on the Slovenian coast.
DAY 02: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SLOVENE RIVIERA On the first day we will take a tour along the Slovenian Riviera. The first stop will be the cultural town of Piran, the most beautiful town far and wide. Its beauty lies in the car-free uniform townscape and its distinct old town. It is Slovenian medieval coastal jewel. The main square is named after Giuseppe Tartini, a famous violinist and a composer who was born in Piran. On the hill above the square you can see the Church of Saint George, also being the patron saint of the town. The small town is still partially surrounded by a typically Venetian wall situated in the Bay of Piran which used to serve as the protection of this marine and salt trade hub. After that we are going to Portoroz. The "Rose Harbor" has, thanks to its location in the protected bay, the best climate in the Gulf of Trieste. The old town of Koper is also worth discovering. It is full of narrow streets bustling with beautiful homes and many artful details. Overnight stay.
DAY 03: PORTOROZ–(OPTIONAL TRIESTE)-PORTOROZ Day off. For this day, we recommend a trip to neighbouring Italy with a short orientation tour of Trieste and then a visit to the Miramare Castle. Emperor Francis Joseph's brother Maximilian, who reigned as Emperor of Mexico since 1864 had the castle built. You can find several references to the stays of Franz Joseph and Elisabeth in the castle. Even the terraced park with a variety of exotic trees is well worth seeing (during the tours a maximum of 25 people are allowed to enter the castle at once - larger groups are split up). Afterwards a return to the hotel on the coast is planed. Overnight stay.
DAY 04: PORTOROZ-CROATIAN ISTRIA-PORTOROZ We'll head onto Croatia for a day. The first stop is in Hum – officially the smallest town in the world with only 22 inhabitants. Following the Mirna river valley we will reach the villages of Livade and Motovun, towns drifting between dreams and reality, located on the peak of a hill offering a magnificent view of the valley and the surrounding hills. The Groznjan and Motovun regions are most famous for their truffles, as well as for one of the best white wines Croatia has to offer. The road will lead us further to Porec for a walking tour where we will visit the ancient Euphrasius basilica - the sine qua non of religious architecture with outstanding Byzantine mosaics from the 5th century and we will further continue to Rovinj. The Jewel of Istria. The town has a long history and was a settlement of Venetian or Illyrian tribes before being conquered by the Romans. We will stroll around the old town visiting St. Euphemia's church and some lovely narrow streets. Return to Slovenia and the hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY 5: PORTOROZ Morning at leisure. Transfer to the airport/end of services.
