DAY 01: LJUBLJANA
Morning arrival to Ljubljana. It has won the European Green Capital Award for 2016. We will start the city tour that consists of a walk around the old city centre and a tourist train ride to the castle hill. After an ascent to outlook tower at Ljubljana Castle with a beautiful panoramic view of the city, we descend the hill on foot to the old city centre. We'll pass the Town Hall and continue through the historical city centre, well known for its unique architectural beauty, which is the result of the Baroque and Art Nouveau periods and, most notably, the work of the famous 20th century architect Joze Plecnik. Why not end the tour with a boat ride on the Ljubljanica river? Free afternoon. Overnight stay.
DAY 02: LJUBLJANA-KARST AND COAST MYSTERY-LJUBLJANA
Discovering the Slovenian coast and the Karst region. The first stop is the visit of medieval Predjama castle with its dramatic setting in the gaping mouth of a mountain. The tour continues to Skocjan caves, one of the largest and most beautiful Karst sights which is also enlisted as UNESCO world heritage site. After seeing the caves and having tasted some wine and prosciutto from the region, we head on to the Slovenian coast and discover Piran, the Slovenian medieval coastal jewel. The main square is named after Giuseppe Tartini, a famous violinist and a composer who was born here. On the hill above the square you can see the Church of Saint George, the patron saint of the town. The small gem is still partially surrounded by a typical Venetian wall situated in the Bay of Piran which used to serve as the protection of this marine and salt trade hub. In the afternoon we can head on to Lipica, the homeland of the white Lipizzaner. Return to Ljubljana. Overnight stay.
DAY 03: ALPINE FAIRYTALE
After breakfast we will drive to the north-west. The Alpine region lies between the Julian Alps and the Karavanke high peaks. We'll make our first stop at Bled, the magnificent alpine village with a mountain lake and a tiny island in the middle, and admire the amazing view from the old castle up on the cliff. A challenge for your eyes and your body awaits you on the island where a temple of the Slavic goddess of love Ziva used to stand. A glorious gothic church takes its place nowadays. To reach the ancient glory on the island we recommend you to take a special boat called »pletna«. We will continue to the breathtaking beauty of Bled’s Vintgar gorge, where we'll take a short walk through the national park… After tasting the exquisite famous Bled cream cake we head to the breathtaking beauty of Vintgar gorge. After that we will make a short stop in Skofja Loka, have a walk around this medieval town, situated under the castle and the monastery and visit the gingerbreak museum. Return to Ljubljana, overnight stay.
DAY 04: A TALE OF MARIBOR, PTUJ AND WINE
From Ljubljana we will travel to Maribor, the second biggest town in Slovenia which was named the European Capital of culture in 2012. Maribor is surrounded by wine-growing hills on all sides. Its historic town centre carries a distinct Austrian influence, and we will admire the lively and colourful squares – Castle square, Slomsek square with the cathedral, Main Square, franciscan church, the old sinagogue and of course Lent, the old river port. The oldest vine in the world still grows in front of the Old Vine house. The confirmed age of this “Zametovka” or “Modra Kavcina” vine is over 400 years, which won it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes. We wil take a tour to Jeruzalem, a picturesque village known for its stunning scenery and one of the most beautiful wine roads in Europe. The Jeruzalem Wine Road is famous for wide myriad of excellent wines. Wine tasting in that part of Slovenia is an absolute must. We will finally arrive to Ptuj, one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia. Ptuj is the oldest town in the coutry with a history dating back all the way to the roman period, and has many monuments to prove it. It is built on the top of huge wine cellars on the banks of the river Drava. Situated by the river, Ptuj was an important stop on the prehistoric Baltic – Mediterranean amber trading route. The view from the castle above the city is simply breathtaking. Return to Ljubljana. Overnight stay.
DAY 05: LJUBLJANA
In the morning there will be some spare time to explore the hidden parts of Ljubljana and relax on the vivid banks of the Ljubljanica river. Optional transfer to the airport/end of services.
